Diary 1

The first days in the studio

The first days in the studio....

The boys from the UK arrived safely and before schedule the night at 24th of August, all ready to start working and recording the morning after. I must say these guys are amazing musicians and top chaps, I am real honored to have the chance to work with these guys.

Alans first ‘pro’ gig in September 1980 was with singer/songwriter guitarist John Martyn. This led to sharing the stage and working in the studio with artists like; Phil Collins, Dave Gilmour, Lee Perry, Ringo Star, Eric Clapton and Robert Palmer.

He has toured with Canadian guitarist Amos Garrett, backed US guitar player Brent Mason, guitar legend Hank Marvin and made several tours of Europe with Blues legend Long John Baldry.

Alan also have songwriting credits with Robert Palmer, John Martyn, Sally Barker, Rev Doc and The Congregation, The Backroom Boys and Then Came The Wheel.

A brief introduction of myself

Vidar Ruud was born in Årdal on the west part of Norway. I realized in very early age that music had a huge influence on me, especially blues and rock music. I got my first electric guitar at the age of 8 and started playing in different bands at the age of 10. Most cover bands and blues tributes. From I was 15 to 18 we had a band called "Pearmain" which was my first experience in writing and making original music, we split up when we moved to differebt areas in the country.

The latest years I have been playing different cover projects. I've also toured with Steve Phillips from the Notting Hillbillies and done some promotion work with Guy Fletcher (Dire Straits)

I have always loved to make music and has worked on different ideas over the years. It was when I left my job and decided to put all I had into the music I really got time to sit down and get these songs for my record done.  I must say it has been a great experience and a privilege to work with what you really love and feel "home", and I'm just in the start of it!

Thanks to all my friends and family who has been inexpressible supportive during this period.

The first day in the studio we used a couple of hours to set the right drum sound. Arne had worked all day before together with Tor Bjarne Bjelland (which kindly rented us his brand new Ludwig kit) to get it sound as good as possible.

Arran testing out the drums and getting the right sound

We had to tweak the sound on the drums a lot during the session and try different snares to fit the songs. The songs on this record will not be in a similar style... and that needs a different sound on each one of them.

During this session we have been working 10-15 hours each day! It is important to get a couple of hours away from it all to have a good meal and some good drinks! Aran is also a good cook and he dished up with some fantastic chicken curry one day
